The Ancestor Service for February 2024 is now going on until the candles are completed. 43 participants shared the names of 377 named individual ancestors and of 37 pets, who were all remembered as part of the service; we also honored thousands and perhaps millions of unknown ancestors from various families and bloodlines, as well as our ancestors lost in the Middle Passage.
Our Facebook group has a collection of photos of the altar before and after, which the ancestors permitted me to take so I could share with you. You can view them here. You can also check out a 30-second video of the altar, in which you can hear some of the candles crackling. (I mapped out whose candles are where, so that I can keep track of how the candles burn, and if they do anything meaningful I will be contacting the owners of those candles to let them know if there are any messages to be divined from that, tomorrow or in a few days depending on how long the various candles take to burn down.
I’ll be in touch to update everyone on this as well as to add up the receipts and figure out how much will be donated and where it will be donated to. Thank you very much and I hope you will also join me (or join me for the first time if you’ve not already!) in honoring the ancestors at our next service, which will be on the evening of Wednesday, March 6.
